We Are Okay

We Are Okay is about Regent Park, a social housing project situated in Toronto, Canada. In the beginning I wanted to juxtapose this low-income community with fairy tales, but somehow it turned into a storybook that contests the media representation of what the 'hood is. It consists of lyrics from well-known rappers, and personal accounts of people who have lived in Regent Park. The photo book, which consists of photos taken from the Internet and my dad’s camera, is meant to be read with the storybook, and showcases the construction happening in Regent Park. As the transformation continues in Regent Park, residents are given the enormous task of how they would define their lives, both for themselves and for the rest of the city. And the feeling is one of hope.
