ALUBON CHAIR
-small series chair-

At this university project our task was to design and create a small series chair under 2 months. We got semi-finished moulded plywood chair shells from Plydesign Ltd. what we had to work with. It was the base point of our chairs and we could not modify it too much.

I started my project with checking the 60’s and 70’s lounge chairs, because I wanted to make something old-school looking. My target group was my grandmother’s age because they used to do “lounge” with coffee and cookies. Even so I wanted to make a modern looking, stable and inviting easy chair to the modern houses. That is why the chair looks like a bit old, but with the bent aluminium legs and with the black modern EPDM material it looks so up-to-date product.

I had to figure out the thickness of the aluminium because of the material, so I did a lot of experiments. Another experiment was to make a shell for the bendt legs, because this was not a simple bending. I had to bend on a cone. The final dimension was 50 mm in width, 1000 mm in length and 2 mm in depth. I fixed these legs to the schell with
24 galvanized screws.
