Hong Kong Life-series

Change of scenario.
This is what I love about #hongkong , the art scene! I was walking down the road after picking up tickets for the #affordableartfairhk from #thestudycafe (another cute place with a great vibe)when I saw this written while waiting at the signal. .
.
It absolutely caught my attention for obvious reasons, and I had to go check this place. #hkfringeclub was the most beautifully done decor I had seen, with lots of artwork and accessories! Unfortunately they were closing at that time. But I know what is on the top of my list to visit! .
I have always been fascinated with lights . I remember when I had come to HK as a tourist back in 2011 I used to wonder and try to find out if they have some extraordinary supply of electricity😂.
Quick sketch of this omnipresent fast food joint!
.
.
Another thing I have noticed about HK,people eat so much of Mc Donald’s and are still so fit looking🤷🏻‍♀️
Sunday morning done right. This is one of the most instagrammed spot in Hongkong, which is in Kennedy town😊.
.
As usual, as I have mentioned before that the fitness level of old people in Hongkong is more than me, there were a lot of senior citizens swimming in the rough waters.

The colour palette and energy of this place was so vibrant!.
Colorful historical muse at the Hong kong museum of history. Was able to squeeze in 2.5 sketches despite reaching late afternoon and being an indecisive pigeon in choosing what to sketch😂.
.
.
But this is how I picture the atmosphere around when this dance is happening!
Today’s sketching with @urbansketchershk was such a visual delight. This has to be the most well displayed and informative museum of history I have been to.
.
I had so much difficulty choosing what to sketch🙈. I finally settled in the most colorful section, the folk and culture section. .
In the Taiping Qingjiao ceremony, giant effigies of Chinese gods are erected to guard against malicious spirits. .
The gods presented differ according to the ethnic background of the villages. Punti villages favour Chenghuang( walled city god), Baiwucheng ( the spectre warden) and Dajiang ( a martial god), while Hoklo villages prefer Tudi ( the earth god) and Shanshen ( the mountain god). .
The only common effigy is the Dashiwang, the King of Ghosts, who polices the ghosts and spirits that come to partake of the ceremonial offerings.
The only time the fast Hong Kong life comes to a comfortable pause. The morning breakfast over newspaper, chit chats, cigarettes and their beloved pets. That baby carriage had her pet dog and ate breakfast with her!.
The signature  red taxis and lush green parks and spotless skies on a breezy day! Never did the hues in a visual weave so well together!
I was on my way back after dropping my artwork, I decided to have my sandwich and doritos by the pier. I was busy chomping and licking the doritos cheese off my fingers that I noticed that this guy with the most zen expression fishing. Now a lot of locals are seen fishing so it didn’t strike much.

But somehow he was the fishing ninja rockstar of the pier. People were keenly observing him. Especially this guy next to him who was watching with bated breath. .
I don’t know whether it was his fancy kit or his ways. But I knew this that, both these men aren’t going to move for sometime now. I remembered I was carrying my ipad and quickly wiped my dorito laden fingers and decided to capture this awkward moment. The fishy onlooker and the fisher guy !

Places over people always.
Haw Par Mansion in all its glory!
Something that I love about #hongkong is that you have history nestled in greenery right in the city limits.
.
The Nan lian garden is a Chinese Classical garden designed in the Tang Dynasty style with hills , water feature, trees, rocks and wooden structures. The garden was a joint project of the#chilinnunnery and #hongkonggovernment .
.
It was so well maintained and the fact that it was colorful was a bonus. Yellow is one of my favorite colors to add to a sketch, it did help that this was the actual color of the structure!
.
The whole composition was begging to be sketched. Perfect place to be in a winter afternoon!
For the #uskhk sketchcrawl the location was the iconic #central. I wasted a lot of time trying to pick a spot. Because every place here has its character. Be it the classic buildings here or the vibrant markets or the typical squares. Finally I squatted bang opposite The Center . .
I chose this spot because it would allow me to capture different elements and of course play around with a lot of colours which is the main reason I sketch😁.
This old temple with all its mystery, a totally abandoned old building right next to it. A small shrine with abandoned idols nearby. Just the kind if place I can spend hours fiddling with my imagination.
.
The intricate sculptures , colourful ornate designs still shrouded in mystery makes it a perfect location .
.
It was almost meditative sitting to sketch here. Quiet, lush green, esoteric historical beauty with a dash of curious onlookers is how I describe this location😊.
.
Kept it less busy this time!
The Instagram Pier located on the waterfront of Sai Wan is also know as the West district Public Cargo Depot.
.
It has become a popular tourist attraction and location for photographers. .
Despite it being in the afternoon, this location had its regulars like the people clicking photos, the runners and devout cargo loaders! .
I chose to show a bit of the cargo also because this composition lets me use all my favourite colors😍!.
.
The weather kept playing peekaboo with me😐.Pleasant, hot then pleasant but I stuck it out. And I am pleased with the result, if not the the back pain and further tan!
According to Wikipedia, Blue House refers to a 4-storey balcony-type tenement block located at 72-74A Stone Nullah Lane, Wan Chai, Hong Kong.It is named after the blue colour painted on its external walls. It is one of the few remaining examples of tong lau of the balcony type in Hong Kong and is listed as Grade I historic building.
.
Well I didn’t want to go to Wanchai in the morning to get in a quick sketch so I settled for the ‘blue house’ in my very area, Kennedy town. I have named it the blue house of Ktown😃. It is the same blue which I have been wanting to capture, juxtaposed with a similar yellow around it!
.
If you are in Kennedy town, try finding my local ‘blue house’ . You won’t be disappointed 😬!

The Kennedy town Swimming pool, also rechristened as the flying saucer pool according to my vivid imagination 😂.
.
This pool is near the Kennedy town waterfront. It has two 50m pools and a 25m pool, children’s pool and a jacuzzi. The futuristic pool building is clad in zinc while a translucent insulated membrane roofing system allows diffuse natural light to reach the indoor pool hall. .
Despite this being such a pool to go to , despite living here for more than a year , I have never been here. I don’t know maybe in my mind it never registers as a pool with that shape!
.
Also Swipe for the process video! And the frantic picture that I could take before the rain started spluttering on my iPad screen!
.
Have you noticed this differently shaped swimming pool in Kennedy town?
Sketching in my hood today with the Wahayeah group. I had already sketched all the places worth sketching in my area except this beautiful pier which I see everyday. I had almost taken it for granted as it’s right beneath my apartment, I always went for places a bit away.
.
So today I decided to sketch the view which looks gorgeous anytime of the day, come rain or sunshine❤️. This view has been my company in all sorts of moods😊. .
The weather was literally playing mind games today, oscillating between sunburn mode and playful showers but I made it to the sketch walk with the #wahayeahsketchgroup .
.
The sketch walk started with a guided tour about the estate. Since I have not yet picked up the language, I had to rely on the internet for info.According to wiki, Kwun Tong Garden estate was built by the Hong Kong Housing society between the 1950s and 1960s to accommodate the workers working in the industrial area on the newly reclaimed land along Kwun Tong harbour front .It is the largest Housing Society estate by number of flats.
.
I generally choose a weather proof spot so that come rain or shine the sketching is on till the end of time😂.
I parked myself under a flyover. My sketching was also the source of interim entertainment for the people waiting for the bus.
.
Not the right day to go for outside sketching!!! The sweltering heat was the challenge, more than the perspective 😂.
.
Today’s sketch walk with @urbansketchershk was at the old public housing societies in the Shek Kip Mei area. .
According to Wiki, Hong Kong's public housing program was initiated by Governor Alexander Grantham following a major fire on 25 December 1953. The Shek Kip Mei area was the location of tens of thousands of makeshift homes of immigrants from Mainland China. The fire cost many lives, and left 53,000 people homeless.
.
The public housing program introduced "multi story building" with fire- and flood-proof construction. The clearance of the fire debris and demolition of the remaining makeshift houses paved the way for construction of the Shek Kip Mei Low-cost Housing Estate.
The weather cleared up and how today😍. Decided had to make hay while the sun shines😂. .
.

The banyan tree wall on the Forbes street is synonymous to Kennedy town. Decided to capture this historical symbol of Kennedy town.
.

According to @mtrhk , there are approximately 1,000 masonry wall trees grown from openings in 500 masonry stone retaining walls in Hong Kong. Forbes Street Masonry Wall Trees represent the widest and the oldest among them. The old masonry wall and banyan trees form a stunning “fresco” which is beautifully preserved for over a century.
.
According to @scmpnews the practice of growing trees directly on walls originated with 19th century Guangdong masonry workers known as the Wu Hua. The colonial government had a policy of using mostly Chinese banyan trees, whose powerful roots strengthened retaining walls on slopes, helping prevent landslides.
