For this project I focused on government vocabulary words. I wanted to promote educating yourself on the basics of politics, because no matter what your beliefs are, it is imperative that you keep yourself educated and check your facts. I loved working on this project and I can't wait to participate in the 36 Days of Type challenge again!
A is for Absentee Ballot.
A ballot completed and typically mailed in advance of an election by a voter who is unable to be present at the polls.
B is for Ballot box.
A sealed box into which voters put completed ballots.
C is for Congress.
The United States Congress is the bicameral legislature of the Federal government of the United States consisting of two chambers: the Senate and the House of Representatives.
D is for debate.
A formal discussion on a particular topic in a public meeting or legislative assembly, in which opposing arguments are put forward.
E is for Electoral Collage.
(In the US) a body of people representing the states of the US, who formally cast votes for the election of the president and vice president.
For is for Freedom.
The key to freedom is stated in our Declaration of Independence : "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed."
G is for Grassroots.
A grassroots movement (often referenced in the context of a political movement) as defined by Webster's Third International Dictionary, is one which uses the people in a given district as the basis for a political or economic movement.
H is for House of Representatives (USA).
The House is composed of Representatives, allocated to each of the 50 states. The House is charged with the passage of federal legislation, known as bills, which, after concurrence by the Senate, are sent to the President for consideration.
I is for Immigrant.
A person who comes to live permanently in a foreign country.
J is for Judiciary.
The judiciary (also known as the judicial system or court system) is the system of courts that interprets and applies the law in the name of the state.
K is for kleptocracy. What a word...
A government or state in which those in power exploit national resources and steal; rule by a thief or thieves.
L is for Liberty.
The state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one's way of life, behavior, or political views.
M is for Majority Party.
A major party is a political party that holds substantial influence in a country's politics, standing in contrast to a minor party.
N is for News.
Paying attention to the news (hopefully discerning information from multiple different sources) is one of the best ways to keep updated with politics.
O is for Oval Office.
The Oval Office is the working office space of the President of the United States located in the West Wing of the White House, Washington, DC.
P is for President.
The President of the United States is the head of state and head of government of the United States of America.
Q is for quorum.
The number of senators that must be present for the Senate to do business. The Constitution requires a majority of senators (51) for a quorum. Often, fewer senators are actually present on the floor, but the Senate presumes that a quorum is present unless the contrary is shown by a roll call vote or quorum call.
R is for Referendum.
A general vote by the electorate on a single political question that has been referred to them for a direct decision.
S is for Senate.
The upper house of the United States Congress. Two senators are elected from each state, regardless of state population, guaranteeing each state equal representation. Senators are elected for six-year terms.
T is for Term.
The political direction and control exercised over the actions of the members, citizens, or inhabitants of communities, societies, and states; direction of the affairs of a state, community, etc.
U is for United Nations.
The United Nations is an intergovernmental organization tasked to promote international cooperation and to create and maintain international order.
V is for Veto.
A constitutional right to reject a decision or proposal made by a law-making body.
W is for White House.
The White House is the official residence and workplace of the President of the United States.
X is for Xenophobia.
Intense or irrational dislike or fear of people from other countries.
Y is for Youth.
It has been amazing to see such a wave of younger generations become so passionate about government and their role in it. I hope that this trend continues.
Z is for Zeal.
Great energy or enthusiasm in pursuit of a cause or an objective.
