Supermarket Promotions Application
Winner of the Enterprise Bronze Award for Best Swiss Apps 2016
We created this app as part of a digital transformation for a supermarket chain that did nearly everything manually (i.e. pens and paper, phone calls, emails). When it came to this particular user and their job of serving samples, there were quite a few bottlenecks that we were able to smooth over with my lightweight and accessible designs supported by the power of some incredible Swift developers. At the end of the day, we completely changed the way the users approached their job and more importantly, we made them happier, which is really what design is all about, right? On top of that, this was my first iOS project as the only designer on the team, so I had to step up and extend myself beyond my experience. It was a huge growing opportunity and it made me a hell of a lot more confident going forward.
How the sausage is made

These users needed a new way to manage their tasks, their employer needed a way to hold them accountable, and communication overall needed to be streamlined.

First the users needed a way to see their schedule and store locations every day. Before our app, they had to constantly check their emails and make several phone calls to confirm their schedules.
Then the users were given a packet with materials about their promotional product. This packet included dietary information as well as cooking instructions. Our app allowed the user to pull up this information at any time and place, as well as view instructional videos about their product.
When the user arrived at the store, they had to go search for the product and hope that they picked the correct one off the shelf. Our app allowed the user to scan and verify an item by its barcode.
Then the user would have to take a picture of their booth and text it to their manager. With our app, we enabled the user to take a picture and submit it in the app. We then built a system for the manager to verify these pictures, which reduced the pressure on the managers as well as the stress of the user.
During a promotion, the user had to manually keep track of their time. With our app, they could record their breaks and hours with a single tap.
And finally, we changed the way the user submitted expenses. Before they had to save every receipt and bring them in to their managers. With our app, they could take pictures of their receipts and record all of their expenses in the app, which expedited the entire process and enabled the user to be reimbursed more quickly (naturally, a huge win with the users).

I worked back and forth with the users and their managers until every piece of the app suited their needs visually and functionally. Every manual process that created strain on the user was taken into account, worked out in the designs, and iterated on.

Below is an example of my iterations, specifically the process and thinking that occurs behind the designs. This is how the user's promotion cards changed over the course of the project.
Clarity, Deference, Depth

This app was designed to adhere directly to Apple's Human Interface Guidelines. On top of being designed consistently with Apple's core apps, this app is completely accessible, takes advantage of all the device's functionality, and was developed natively, so it works like a beast.
Friendly Design, Apple Quality

My goal with this design was to create a friendly companion for the workers at the supermarket. Since we were augmenting their job, it was my goal to not introduce any new pain points and make the transition to digital as smooth and positive as possible. As it always is with these kinds of projects, the first app's success has the potential to lead to a prosperous relationship involving a whole suite of apps.

When designing this app, I internalized Apple's easiest and most frequently used apps, I studied the users' current paperwork and workflows, and I combined these things into an efficient, low friction app. This enabled the users to focus on their in-store obligations, avoid the pain points associated with their back-end work processes, and ultimately have a happier work experience.
