Development Platform of Greatness

Development Platform of Greatness
Tools, dashboards, and an Australian / Medieval theme.
Boomerang is an IBM platform for application management, team on-boarding, and development resources. At first, it was just a long scrolling page with links to various tools such as GitHub and Jira. Now it's a Swiss army knife of a product, rolled out internationally, with an experience that makes people think IBM is hip.
What the fuck was my role?

I worked with one other designer and a team of developers throughout the iterations and churn of this project. I acted first as a design researcher: facilitating design thinking workshops, interviewing users, and learning about the infrastructure that would support the platform. Then I acted as a UX designer: collaborating with my co-designer to work through the information architecture and then the wireframes. Then I acted as a UI designer: designing a scalable style guide, interaction patterns, and the voice for site copy and email communications. Finally, I acted as a scrum master as design came to an end: I hosted daily scrum, retrospectives, and sprint planning.
#Process

Architecture was key to reimagining this platform and thinking forward toward the cohesive, multifaceted experience that it is today. The churn and burn was quick and iterative. Cycles went from the designs to the users to the developers and back to the designers. Feast your eyes on these ugly iterations.
Interactions and UI choices

I focus on making actions obvious and contextual for the user. I think about what information they need to see and when they need to see it. I try to create easily scannable pages with intuitive navigation and clever divedown-ability. Micro-interactions and animations are my bag baby. I think they provide really great experiences for the user, allow a dash of pleasant surprise, and make a product look polished.
Enough character to choke a horse

I like to flex my writing degree and my free spirit as much as possible. I pushed the limits and got as weird as I could (within corporate reason) to provide a unique, and #delightful experience. I researched Australian slang and infused it into my copy when I could. I tried to tell a story with my graphics and create lovable characters for users to enjoy, even if they were coming across an error. Megan and I developed a scalable graphic style that we used across the platform. The graphics were quick to create, flexible enough for anything, and allowed for delicious color.
