Emily Eldridge's profile

Love Letters Vol. I

"Love Letters" is a self-published magazine created as a project for a Master's in Graphic Design course at EINA Centro Universitario de Diseño y Arte in Barcelona, Spain.

The first edition of a type enthusiast's longtime obsession — Love Letters was born out of the Instagram account @loveletters.bcn, a side project of American-born artist and illustrator, Emily Eldridge. Collecting photos of signs and type for years, a move to Barcelona opened up a new world of typography obsession.  The unique appearance of the city's shop signs gave birth to an Instagram account that paid homage to their charming vintage appeal. And as the account grew, travel beyond Barcelona offered a look at sign and type styles from around the world.

The first issue of "Love Letters" returns to where it all began — Barcelona. A city known for its architectural and artistic icons is certainly no stranger to good design, but uncovered here are hidden gems that lie far from the tourist traps of Las Ramblas and Barceloneta.  Love Letters takes you on a journey to a lesser-known side of the city's history, a step back into the 1970s (and beyond), where Spanish type designers added creative flourishes rarely seen anywhere else.

Enjoy the hunt for great signs from one of Europe's most beautiful cities.

Thus far, the publication lives in digital form. Further research is needed by the designer to complete fully fleshed out articles that are historically accurate.  Therefore, in its current state, the magazine should be appreciated as an object of design, a showcase for the beauty of vintage Spanish signs.
