This project was commissioned by Alexa Harding (a local ceramicist). She wanted a logo that consisted of her signature surrounded by a circle. She sent me a sketch with her concept and told me that she wanted a more perfect circle around her signature. Alexa hoped that the signature could still look somewhat organic though and handmade when digitized.
I sent her three versions of the logo: one that matched her concept art identically, one that matched her description perfectly, and one with my own personal adjustments. I felt like having a perfect circle would not match the very organic qualities of her signature. So I created a circle using a compass and ink-brush, scanned it; then digitized it to work with how I had produced the signature. Ultimately, she chose the logo with my organic circle edit.
A few months later, Alexa contacted me again and was concerned about some of the qualities of her logo. Some people had told her that they were having difficulties reading her handwriting. She also noticed that she was becoming more attracted to minimal design and wanted to have her logo updated accordingly. Together we developed a new more simple concept. We ended up with a sort of lyrical but strong monogram. It was very important to include Alexa because she would be adding the finished logo to her pieces by hand.
I created a vector logo based off of our concept and began working on the logotype to rest beneath her icon. I gave examples that used Bodoni, Futura and Bonn. She liked Bonn the best.
Alexa now etches her logo onto her ceramic and sculpture work and uses her digital assets for promotions and in her online presence.
