Paper, Sensation of Reality

In this digital world, we live in contradictions. In a digital world, we are physical beings with physical senses and needs. Yet, we find ourselves drawn into the digital realm of distractions. Gradually, we become detached from the sensations of reality.

Paper, Sensation of Reality is a project that reminds the creative us of our needs to connect with reality through the act of paper making. While most of us are familiar with production of paper, actually experiencing the feel of pulp and water in our palms engraves a deeper impression.

The project spreads its awareness through the values of participation design. A public paper making workshop was held by the design team to involve audience in the process and have them create their own papers. In that hands-on act, participants develop a form of attachment and belonging towards the physical papers they create.

The design team then aggregates these pieces of attachment into a paper quilt. The quilt is an emotional collective and a tangible representation of consciousness and attachment for the material created by our participants. As a whole, the success of this project is informed by the participatory experience of our audience on a physical and emotional sense. Findings from this project helps us realise the need to sustain our states of mind by getting in touch with real-world sensations in this digital realm.

Print designs for this project include a poster screen printed on handmade papers recycled from collected paper waste, and a hand bound booklet introducing the project.
