Pop-Up Emotions
We were challenged to create a paperboard pop-up design that communicates a human emotion with only color, shape, and three-dimensional form. With the usage of red card stock paper, and black that I hand scratched a texture into, I was able to convey my interpretation of the emotion Anger/Fury.
Final model that displays my emotion Anger/Fury. Different angles show the depth and how the model works and would fold down to close.

I created three prototypes, each based on a different emotion: anger, fear and surprise. The photographs show how each pop-up folds and expresses each emotion.
The concept for this emotion: anger, was to show how someone might explode with fury from the inside out. The sharp triangular shapes help depict this. Later color was added to my final model to depict the emotion even more.

The concept for this emotion: fear, was to show how overwhelming fear can be. The small shape represents the person facing this emotion, as an imposing wave of fear itself looms over, ready to devour.

The concept for this emotion: surprise, was to show the more pleasant side of this emotion. The colors chosen contrast each other but also work as a team. The mandala form the pop-up takes is complete with springy elements that "surprise" the viewer when opened.

As a first step in the process, prototypes of different styles of pop-up we created: Angle Fold, Wheel, Pull Tab and Parallel Fold.
My prototype for Angle Fold.

My prototype for Wheel.

My prototype for Pull Tab.

My prototype for Parallel Fold.

This is the preliminary design research done that lead to my final pop-up interpretation of my emotion Anger/Fury. Each square represents a different form of anger all leading up to the last panel where all the drawings are combined to show the emotion at its fullest intensity.
