GSA: Kain Chik Dua Mungka Media Kit

Gunong Sayang Association (GSA)

Founded in 1910, Gunong Sayang Association (GSA) is a cultural group that aims to promote Peranakan (specifically, Straits-born Chinese descended from early Chinese settlers in Malaya) culture in Singapore. They do this particularly through the art of Wayang Peranakan, a traditional theatrical form performed in their Baba Malay language. GSA puts up these theatrical productions on a yearly basis, in order to raise awareness and funds to counter the dwindling interest in Peranakan culture. To promote this year's performance, "Kain Chik Dua Mungka" or "Double-faced", [kloo] was approached to put together a media kit along with some gifts to give to journalists during a press event, where a short scene from the play will also be performed live.
Art Direction: Hironori Kawaguchi
Agency: [kloo]

Key Visual

To tease the treacherous nature of the plot, I mirrored the silhouettes of the main cast and arranged them within a frame inspired by Peranakan tiles. Although Kain Chik Dua Mungka is an idiom that means double-faced, it also refers to a type of cloth that has a different texture on each side. As such, as an additional design element, I thought it suitable to fill the frame up with patterns that are commonly found on Peranakan textiles.
Along with a custom tote bag and mug, we also included a leaflet with the performance's details, a brochure containing background information about GSA interviews with the cast and also Five Stones, a traditional Singaporean game popular with children in olden days.
