A Game of Thrones: The Card Game
I was commissioned by my good friend to design a series of collectible cards for the Game of Thrones card game. I designed 8 'House Cards' for the 8 houses of Westeros that are playable in the game (The Night's Watch is a playable house in this game.) The twist: to do traditional Chinese-style illustrations for the cards. A Song of Ice and Fire, being an epic series about war, politics and fantasy, prompted me to incorporate visual elements from the woodblock-printed illustrations from historical Chinese novels of a similar genre (i.e. Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Journey to the West). As a huge fan of Thrones, I had so much fun combing through the history and lore of each of the noble houses of the Seven Kingdoms. Beyond sigils and house words, each house's identity is also heavily influenced by geography and religion, which I made sure to include references to in my designs. These cards were then given out as prizes during the card game tournaments.
