Wood from the Trees

Wood from the trees comes from the idea of working with both clear and coloured Braille. If read visually, then the printed Braille reads "Trees" thanks to the clear dots. If read via touch then the work reads wood, as some of the coloured dots are actually flat.

Originally this was simply a test of a new substrate, but the concept of playing with a flat visual and a raised service is something I go on to explore in my later work. When you wish to decrease a Braillist's dependence on sight and push touch based reading (for instance, some degenerative disorders mean that a reliance on sight won't always be an option) then printing flat dots and embossing different words on top of them, might be a valuable teaching tool.
