Milton Hershey School's profile

Classroom Activities that Teach Employability Skills

For over a century, the Milton Hershey School has been providing quality education to students from households with low incomes. Committed to preparing students to succeed in the workforce, the Milton Hershey School’s curriculum emphasizes the importance of employability skills.

To succeed in the 21st century workplace, students need to learn the subject-specific skills for their preferred careers and employability skills for professional development. These employability skills can be just as important to success as the ordinary lessons students learn in the classroom. These skills involve conflict resolution, teamwork, workplace etiquette, and effective communication.

Students at MHS develop employability skills through participation in activities designed to teach one or more of these skills. These activities include:

- Skills-based competitions

Students are challenged to take part in nationwide competitions which focus on career preparation, such as SkillsUSA. Students who participate get to test themselves in the real world and in doing so, they learn the importance of hard work, continuous professional development, and staying calm under pressure.

- Mock phone calls

Students work with local companies in mock cold-calling exercises. Afterward, trained professionals provide feedback to students on their sales and communication skills.

- Active listening

Students sit facing away from each other and one student gives directions to the others to draw something. This activity teaches students how to give clear instructions and how to listen actively.
