Information Graphics: Advertising

Unit 6: Information Graphics: Advertising.
Aim.
Develop the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to design effective and creative page layout solutions using typography, page layout conventions and desktop publishing computer applications.

Learning Outcomes.
1 Be able to investigate information graphics briefs
2 Be able to develop ideas towards information graphics outcomes
3 Be able to present final designs for information graphics applications

Assessment Criteria
Describe through research; advertising design.
Use digital or non digital means to create effective advertising designs around chosen themes.
Use effective techniques to enhance the presentation of your work.

Context.
A lot of graphic design and in particular advertising, gives out some sort of message and there are various meanings hidden and sometimes not hidden in what it is trying to say. Here we will investigate meaning and messages in advertising design; some explicit and some implicit in their meaning. We will then go on to produce adverts of our own. Advertising uses various meanings and messages and an understanding of how these powerful graphic devices work will enable us to become more proficient in our design solutions.

Explicit.
Not implied merely, but distinctly stated : plain language : clear : unreserved : unambiguous (eg. cutout ad pages in lifestyle magazines)
Implicit: Implicit: resting on or trusting another: Implied indirectly, without being directly expressed eg, implying increased riches, beauty, strength (most other ads)

Task 1 – Investigating Advertising
In small groups of two or three you are to begin collecting varied examples of advertising that you can identify as having a message and/or meaning a) implicitly and b) explicitly communicated. Put these in your background workbooks and analyse first verbally and then written, in detail why you think they are either implicit or explicit.

Describing Advertising in your workbook
Please use the questions below to help you analyse your chosen adverts. Describe the design of the advertisement using the following criteria
- Colours – how is colour used? Is it effective?
- Vocabulary used in the ad – is it humorous, technical, jargon, friendly?
- What is the relationship between words and images?
- Is the ad generated using software? If so is it successful?
- Is the ad wordy or image-based – what is the impact?

Values –
• What values do you think the advertiser wants to associate with the product?
• How does the design of the advertisement support these values?

Message –
• What is the message in this advertisement?
• Is the message implicit or explicit?
• How does the design of the advertisement support this message?

Attention grabbers –
• What grabs your attention about the advertisement? How does the design support this?
• Whose attention is the advertisement trying to grab? How does the design aide in this endeavour?

Audience –
• Who is the intended audience for this advertisement? • How does the design support your argument?

Task 2 – Advertising Design Brief
You are to use your knowledge gained in researching implicit and explicit meanings and messages you are to design a series of (min) to (max) 3 adverts or posters from the brief below which convey a message in either an implicit or explicit way - or a mix of both.

Possible design approaches:
Create the adverts from real-world items
Create the adverts using photo manipulation
Create the adverts based on Type
Create the adverts using hand-drawn techniques – organic ad

Option 1 – Training Shoe
You are to design a series of up to 3 adverts promoting a new training shoe.
You are to create a brand name for the shoe and are to choose whether you are creating a campaign for the male or female shoe (or both).

Your target audience:
Teenagers to mid-twenties
Outgoing and enjoy life
Aware of fashion trends
Live life to the full
Enjoy music and sport

Cultural references (ie current fashion trends) are welcomed.
The advert should convey ideas such as confidence, excitement, fashion-consciousness but can also appeal to more quiet and thoughtful young people.

Mens: You are to take one of the current trainers, for example: https://top10geeks.com/top-10-best-training-shoes-men-2017/

Women's: You are to take one of the current trainers, for example: https://www.bestpickers.com/best-cross-training-shoes-for-women/

You are to create at least ONE explicit advert and ONE implicit advert in your 3 examples.
Text may be taken from online advertising for the given shoe or similar.
These designs can be any size and format (eg, square, portrait, landscape, fold-out, leaflet) and can be laid out in InDesign or Photoshop or Illustrator. Imagery may be created in Photoshop and Illustrator.
Use 3D mockups to help promote your final designs.

These are some early idea that I was playing with i was working with the idea of mixing different sports and old classic statues. This developed in to the idea of create you own god and be your own god.
The final idea for the advert and Create your own god.
With these ideas they where straight out adverts that was explicit and
about the trainers. With these two the ideas is still that they are sent from the gods.
the green on is using the adidas stripes as a holy light and the red one is the trainers are on a holy alter for all to see.
Here are some more with bright back drops and glitch effect to them.
These two where late in the day ideas that are inspired by Calligraffiti and Glitch art. I used a free mock up from here https://www.behance.net/gallery/32736673/FREE-PSD-Mockup-Adidas-Superstar
