1587 - Four hundred and thirty one years ago today, Mary Queen of Scots was beheaded for treason against her cousin Queen Elizabeth I of England. 

1997 - The Simpsons made television history with their episode "The Itchy, Scratchy and Pootchie Show" which they then surpassed the Flintstones as the longest running prime-time cartoon series in terms of episodes aired.

1940 - "Tom & Jerry" cartoon created by William Hanna & Joseph Barbera debut by MGM. 
1990 - Nelson Mandela, the leader of the movement to end South African apartheid, was released from prison after 27 years.

1813 - Darwin Day, named after the anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth, the father of evolution.

1980 - World Whale Day, aims to raise awareness of these magnificent creatures. The annual holiday was founded in Maui, Hawaii, to honor humpback whales, which swim off its coast.
2005 - Youtube.com was launched.

1950 - Disney's Cinderella cartoon feature opened in theaters. It was one of the biggest films of the year and was theatrically re-released several times- 1957, 1965, 1973, 1981 and 1987.

1923 - In Thebes, Egypt, English archaeologist Howard Carter entered the sealed burial chamber of the ancient Egyptian ruler King Tutankhamen. He had been looking for King Tut's tomb since his first trip to Egypt in 1891. The outer chambers were discovered in November 1922.
1972 - With the 15,007,034th Volkswagen Beetle coming off the assembly line, the VW Beetle broke the world car production record held for more than four decades by the Ford Motor Company's Model T, which was in production from 1908 and 1927.

1878 - The patent (#200,521) for Thomas Edision's phonograph was granted.

2013 - Eyes Like the Sky is the second studio album by Australian psychedelic rock band King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard released by Flightless Records. Described as a "cult western audio book", the album is narrated and written by Broderick Smith - who tells a story of outlaws, child soldiers, native Americans and gun fights, all set in the American frontier.
2017 - Flying Microtonal Banana is the ninth studio album by Australian psychedelic rock band King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard. It was released on 24 February 2017 on Flightless Records in Australia, ATO Records in the United States, and Heavenly Recordings in the United Kingdom. It is the first of five albums released in 2017, and subtitled "Explorations into Microtonal Tuning, Volume 1".The album is recorded in quarter tone tuning, where an octave is divided into 24 (logarithmically) equal-distanced quarter tones.

1964 - Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali), age 22, defeated champion Sonny Liston in a technical knockout to win the world heavyweight boxing crown.

1616 - Galileo Galilei was formally banned by the Roman Catholic Church from teaching or defending the view that the earth orbits the sun.
1974 - Mirage is the second studio album by the English progressive rock band Camel, released on March 1. It features some of their best-known songs,[citation needed] including "The White Rider" and "Lady Fantasy". It is also a showcase for Andrew Latimer's flute, notably on "Supertwister". There are five tracks on Mirage, two over 9 minutes. Those two are multi-part songs: "Lady Fantasy" and "Nimrodel/The Procession/The White Rider", the latter being about The Lord of the Rings. The album was released on Gama Records/Deram Records. Mick Rock shot the inner sleeve photo.

1781 - German-born English astronomer William Hershel discovered Uranus.
1899 - Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin was issued a US Patent (#621,195) for the invention of his "Navigable Balloon," the rigid airship, known as the Zeppelin.

44 BC - Gaius Julius Caesar was stabbed to death in the Roman Senate house, by 60 conspirators led by Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius Longinus.

1942 - The first V-2 rocket test launched. It exploded at lift-off.
