I was invited by Arctic Culture Lab to stay in Kjøllefjord, Norway for a two month residency in 2017. ”On reflection” is an exhibition based on this residency.

Arriving at Kjøllefjord, I was struck by the serenity and intensity of the Arctic nature, and the constant shift in weather. The sky seemed continually to shift in colour and tone, as did its reflections in the sea. The theme "reflection" started to develop.

A reflection could refer to both thinking and an mirrored image. Within pattern design, there are a number of standard procedures to make a repeat, to create different visual rhythms or symmetries. A reflection, or an mirrored image, is one. A reflection can be seen as an ambiguous concept. It could refer to right or wrong, enforcement or falsification, explanatory or redundant, confirming or copying. A mirrored image points back to the original, as a comment representing both sameness and opposite. The exhibition shows visual investigations of reflections as simple repetitions, as well as opposites, as in upside down versions, mirrored versions, and inverted versions.

The works are based on photography. I use repetition as a way to make abstract interpretations of what I see. It is an attempt to capture and strengthen atmosphere rather than exact motif of what I record with a camera. I aim for expressions in the area between known and unknown, where the viewer might recognize something, yet perhaps need to use imagination to make sense from the imagery.

Some of the works are based on images taken by a web cam placed in Kjøllefjord accessed online, while others are taken with iPhone. My aim is not to capture original pictures at technical perfection, but to use the imagery as a source for reflection.
