Park In The City @ Sultan Street

Park In The City @ Jalan Sultan
Located at the heart of Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown district, PARK IN THE CITY is an oasis for its occupants and the community of Chinatown. The project looks to encourage community living and social interaction between the micro and macro community. Bringing about a transition of the old to the new, traditional to modern, yet still looking into the past for reference and inspiration.

The sculptural outlook of the building drew inspiration from the Chinese fordable lanterns, forming layers which are zig-zag in and out with curved edges and a transparent looked. Metaphorically the building is similar to a lantern that lids up the night and brings vibrant and life to the community and its surrounding.

The introduction of large areas of void and open spaces with a subtle color tone and floor to ceiling window panels makes the building appear transparent and light as if floating in mid-air from a far. The sculptured mid rise greenscape with its waved like terraced outlook is able to add a touch of softness/ calmness visually and emotionally through its curved outlook to a city of mixed emotions.

An inspiration of the pass for the future, a building of height among low-rises, a greenscape among concrete blocks. It contradict in some aspect yet harmonizes a transition for a better future.

Sultan street in early 20th century | Sourced by R.AGE.com.my
Sultan street sits within the old Chinatown district of Kuala Lumpur, with rows of pre-war shop houses alligning the street, a reminisces of the cities past in an ever changing city scape. Still visible are the old trades (textile, sundry and traditional chinese medicine) past down through generation within the bustling scenes of Chinatown as well as the quiteness of the Church and educational institution on one end of the street. It's a place of transiton between the old and the new, the modern and the traditional, the bustling of the town below and the quietness of the institutions above.
