Sweets of Bengal I Brand Design

...

Sweets have been an inseparable part of Bengali culture for centuries, symbolic of the people’s love for rich, decadent desserts. Bangla’r Mishti, otherwise known as Sweets of Bengal, a premium retail outlet, was conceived as a tribute to the age-old tradition of Bengali sweet-making.
For the brand design, we developed a number of graphic mnemonic symbols for each type of sweet and the elements that are intrinsically knotted to Bengali sweets, such as for roshgollas, borfi layers, kheer jamun, jilapi and silver leaves. A grid was then designed to house these mnemonics in different combinations, symbolic of how many elements work in tandem to produce each brand of Bengali dessert. The grid structure is modular, allowing one to easily manipulate it based on the medium of use. The entire design system embraces the two earthy tones of black and wooden-yellow, indicating a longing for roots, in tandem with the brand’s penchant for tradition.
The logo for Bangla’r Mishti was handcrafted and incorporates circular and semi-circular elements tying it back to the mnemonics for the sweets that were developed.
The retail is treated as a gallery where the main exhibit is the variety of sweets, boldly glass-encased on wooden pedestals. Broad space allows one to sift through the exhibition for the sweets they want to buy. The decoration and signage utilize the Sweets of Bengal symbolism in the form of engraved wooden blocks. Albeit a brand for the connoisseurs, the store strongly imbues the rich heritage of Bengal's sweet making traditions.
