The assignment was to design a poster celebrating Kiwi innovations and to communicate complex ideas in a clear, simple way. I selected the discovery of an elusive class of superconductor, discovered by DSIR scientists in1988 and the subsequent development of High-Temperature Superconductive wire (HTS-110TM).
The initial discovery of superconductivity by Heike Kamerlingh Onnes was the inspiration for visualising a way to demonstrate properties of HTS-110. In essence, a light source powered by the same unit of current, glows brighter with superconductive wire than with ordinary copper wire due to its properties. Less electrical resistance through transmission means no lost energy, greatly increasing efficiency, a brighter light and reduced energy costs.
Typography – Univers, modernist sans-serif and reference to the periodic table.
Colour indicates the presence of metallics in the compound.
The overall composition is that of a Figure 8 in reference to ʻNo. 8 fencing wireʻ a common term to represent Kiwi ingenuity.
