Breakfast with Better 4 You Meals

Better 4 You Meals began in 2011 as a way of bringing high-quality breakfast services into California charter schools. Now able to offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner to students in these schools, Better 4 You Meals helps children start their day with good nutrition.

According to the 2012 Hunger in Our Schools survey conducted by the No Kid Hungry organization, school breakfast improved the concentration of kids in 96 percent of classrooms and the academic performance of kids in 89 percent of classrooms. Nevertheless, statistics suggest that only half of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch eat breakfast at school.

Better 4 You Meals attempts to address this disparity by offering schools a variety of breakfast options. Schools may offer breakfast to students before class starts by offering them a meal as they walk into school that they can eat either before class or in class.

Schools may also offer a "Breakfast in the Classroom" option, which can work any number of ways depending on the needs of the school. Some schools choose to have students pick up their breakfast individually, while others have student volunteers or staff members bring breakfast carts into the classroom.

All of these options allow schools to benefit from Universal School Breakfast, a nationwide initiative that seeks to increase breakfast participation by offering free breakfast to all students. Participating schools can work with California Department of Education representatives to arrange administrative logistics.
