California Law Ensures All Students Receive Lunch

Better 4 You Meals, a leading school meal provider, delivers breakfast, lunch, a snack, and dinner for thousands of children in the San Bernardino and Los Angeles school systems. Better 4 You Meals follows all state and federal nutritional guidelines and serves healthy meals that are now more accessible for students across California.

In a move supported by child welfare advocates such as the Children’s Defense Fund, California Governor Jerry Brown enacted The Child Hunger Prevention and Fair Treatment Act in late 2017. In the past, schools had the discretion to offer limited options or deny food to children who had outstanding debt on their meal accounts.

The bill ensures that all children have access to full nutritional meals at school, whether or not their parents are current on any lunch debt. Under the law, schools are also responsible for notifying parents of unpaid balances in a timely manner and helping qualifying families enroll in reduced-price or free lunch programs.

Advocates of the bill say that it will ensure that the thousands of schoolchildren who rely on school meals as their primary food source will not go hungry.
