With the increasing awareness of quality, sustainable and ecologically appropriate consumption over the past few years, society has come to give more value to regional products.
In Cologne there are nine Urban Gardening Project aiming for a growth of locally cultivated products. The given site in Kalk, Cologne, is home to one of the nine projects.
The sale of these products is an important factor for the development of this movement. Through the construction and planning of a market, these ideas will be spread faster.
The site area is surrounded by industrial brick buildings, which highly contrast with the light construction of the market with a steel structure and a glass facade.
The concept revolves around the element earth, inspired by the Urban Gardening Project.
The 140-meter-long and almost 46-meter-wide market hall is supported by ten tree shaped columns. A light grid construction supports the ceiling. Together with a triangular pattern of metal sheets in between the glass result in a leaflike shadow on the floor.
The vertical garden on the left provides an area for the Urban Gardening Project, whose products can afterwards, be sold in the market’s booths.
