WIP deck of cards

Prelim Sketches:
Monochrome Designs:
Final Designs:
Our instructions for this project were to design and create a deck of cards, including a box design. With our finalized designs, we would either print them out and turn them into cards ourselves, or send them off to a company to be printed into a fully-realised deck.

The design scheme for these cards is centered around characters I've created based off of the sun and the moon, characters I share with my partner. The main suits are centered around the two characters named Mauro (sun) and Djuna (moon), the jack being their pet rooster, and the ace being the two of them entwined in a dance. The number cards are made up of imaginary constellations, with the number of stars matching the numbers of the cards.

I tried to stick with a mostly monochrome, black and white color scheme, with touches of color overlaid on the final product. The galaxy pattern in the background alludes to the characters' space themes. The back of the card is a design of both the sun and the moon, matching Mauro and Djuna's ace card of them in a dance.

This project was very interesting, as I'd never created so much of a series of designs for one project! To keep the deck coherent and finding ways to allude to and expand on my own characters was fun, and I'm very pleased with the end result (I also realised that I'd designed a '1' card when there is no such thing in a deck. Oops!).
