Yankees Fire Manager Joe Girardi

Despite coming within one game of reaching the World Series in a season with few expectations, the Yankees fired manager Joe Girardi, who had been the team's bench boss for the past 10 seasons. Since taking over from Joe Torre in 2008, Girardi guided the Yankees to six playoff appearances and four American League Championship Series (ALCS), including a World Series win in 2009. This year's team lost in game 7 of the ALCS against the Houston Astros.

Girardi led the team to a winning record in each of his 10 seasons. The 2017 Yankees won 91 games, their highest total since 2012, when they won 95 games. ESPN's Buster Olney reported one of the main reasons for Girardi's firing was that his relationship with Yankees general manager Brian Cashman had become strained in recent years.
