In the face of the recent devastating hurricanes, there was a rush of news stories that addressed the evacuations, though less-addressed were the stories of the people who were unable to evacuate. As I read about these stories, I began considering those for whom it was safer to remain put. I was particularly fascinated by how zoos have specific procedures that help them to protect their animals during natural disasters, a process that allows them to hunker down and weather the hurricanes. I was especially inspired by the commitment of the human caretakers who remain behind to care for the animals, providing the often invisible support for their animals.
