The recent hurricanes have devastated countless communities. Stories of desperate evacuations dominated the news cycle for a handful of days after each disaster, before they were swiftly overturned by new scandals and eye-catching headlines. As many stories as the news stations briefly picked up, as many stories as there were of suffering and distress in the face of these natural disaster, there were many untold stories. Of particular interest to me were the stories of those who could not evacuate, those who chose to stay behind. Zoos in particular have specific protocols for how to handle natural disasters; their preparation includes having back-up generators, stabilizing enclosures, moving animals into safer locations if possible, and then leaving a small crew behind to care for the animals, to hunker down.
