Brief
Create a movie poster using analog image making methods such as found materials and collage.

Design Concept
I wanted to show the short term memory loss of the main character, Lenny, and thought the visual metaphor of his mind disintegrating into sand was striking. I created this hand-cut typography that I felt paralleled the analog nature of Lenny's own documentation methods—polaroids and scribbled notes.
I printed out the portrait, cut out the "Memento" type and paper strips, poured sand over the composition and photographed it. The director and actor credits and sienna tone were added in photoshop.
Experimentation Process

I created the word "Memento" and the claw like shadow using paper and a phone light. I balanced my phone (with the torchlight on) on the side, held the paper in one hand and my camera in the other and ninja-ed around. For the poster on the right, I wanted to create shadowy bars as a metaphor for the mental "prison" Lenny was in.

Not chosen because: the composition was becoming too busy, and I wanted the focus to be on the key visual (head disintegrating into sand).
I tried to create a melancholic mood with a contrast of red and blue light, which resulted in this moody purple with pink highlights. This was also done using an analog method: I googled for a blue swatch image on my laptop and expanded it to full screen; did the same with a red swatch on my phone; then worked the camera in one hand and phone in the other while telling myself it's all going to be worth it. There was some ignorance then about the magic of Photoshop, but let's just call it #dedication.

Not chosen because: even though I really liked this moody purple aesthetic, it made it look a bit more like a futuristic video game or a cool club visual. So the visual tone wasn't the most appropriate for the movie.
