Case Study – Bankplus mobile banking


Project Brief

Target users are most Vietnamese using Viettel telephone service. Viettel is the biggest national telco corporation with 30M close customers. Following the trend of the world, they are building a wide range of services such as fin-tech, OTT, IoT, and device monitoring. Bankplus is one of their strategic fin-tech products.
Bankplus can be accessed from many platforms: USSD (by typing *123#), mobile app (iOs and Android), and web app (in the future). 
In the mobile app, target users can download from Google Play or App Store, then online register and activate their account by OTP on the phone. After login, they can connect directly with Bank accounts, ATM cards, and credit cards to transfer money, top up, pay bills and buy online services.
I was the main UX Designer for Bankplus. I had to design Bankplus from scratch. Then in my daily work, I designed new features. I also measured and analyzed UX issues and conversion rates and improved them.

The Challenges 

1. The target users do not believe in current mobile fin-tech solutions. They worry about their security and privacy policies when connecting to money sources. 
2. Not all banks are connected to Bankplus platform. It is always in progress. 
3. Customer information database is unreliable. We could not map the customer's phone number to their ID card, personal characteristics, and financial accounts. In fact, in the first steps, we can not determine the personas.
4. The limit of smartphone capacities, such as a small screen, and virtual keyboard... induces financial interaction (like entering the bank accounts, and bill codes...) to become very boring and unacceptable.  
5. Because of the policy of the corporation, we always have a very small technique team and time pressure. 

Research   
Before starting to draw the wireframe, we did research about current best practices, big problems, and top competitors to define the best way for Bankplus. We analyzed some successful case studies in the world, such as Android Pay, Samsung Pay, Paypal, PayTM, Mondo Payment, Alipay or Tencent... I also analyzed some Vietnam competitors like Momo, Zalo Pay, Moca, OnePay.. 
Based on Viettel pros and cons, we supposed that our key powers are Mobile Top-Up Recharge (best price), Money Transfer (full solutions and easiest), and the biggest existing customers database (30M). We also defined the features table to construct the architect of our application. We have verified our assumptions by analytics data, internal interviews and surveys.

User stories
    - As a new visitor (who has never used Bankplus), I have just downloaded this application from App Stores, I want to know what is this. What are major values for me and which can help to solve my problems?... So Bankplus have to answer all my questions in under 10 seconds. 
- As a new visitor, if I want to start using Bankplus, I want to register a new account (one time only), so Bankplus has to provide this feature, which is clear and credible. 
- As a new customer (after register successful), when I want to do something like transfer money, top-up... I have to log in (several times per day), so Bankplus has to provide a secure login feature, which can work easily and fastest. 
- As a customer, when I want to do something regularly, such as top-up my number, transfer salary to my wife or pay my home water, electronic bills... I don't want to remember and re-type this information. So Bankplus has to help me save time and effort.  

Solutions

- Design 3 onboarding screens to show the most important key points of our product. 
- Create a modern flow in which users can scan or try all features without registering or log in. This means users can understand most about our product before deciding to register.
- Show all security certificates, big partners, and awards, use Two-factor authentication to build credibility.
- Apply all the newest technologies, such as fingerprint, auto-detection phone numbers from 3G/4G... for the login screen. 
- Create many methods to perform a feature. For example, users can transfer money by 4 methods: 1. Fill out a clear form, 2. Dropdown from the customized contact list, 3. Clone one from transaction history, 4. Choose from transaction templates. 
- Create an Auto-payment feature. This means most of the monthly transactions will be processed automatically, which users do not need to remember.
