Intimacy & Patterns

Intimacy & Patterns is a gif created to reflect on how intimacy was found through design during a trip to Finland during the 2016 Helsinki Design Week. During my trip, I visited many of Alvar Aalto's works and was introduced to the Siena pattern which I then started to see everywhere. From my observations, I decided that intimacy can come from the act of recognition– either active, or reflective.

Alvar Aalto’s work is full of subtle variations of this Siena fabric pattern that is named after the city Aalto visitied during his honeymoon with Aino, one of his most intimate memories. Recognizing variations of this pattern outside of Aalto’s works, either naturalistic or man-made, was one of the most intimate and exciting parts of this exercise as it required more reflection.
