Week Six - See That Thing?

WEEK SIX - SEE THAT THING?

This week we were to find objects that look like something other than what they are. I have explored this through photography, accompanied with both hand and digital illustration.
IMAGE ONE - SHAMPOO BOTTLES // MINI CITY

TECHNIQUE

Camera: Canon EOS 550D
ISO: 200
F/stop: 28.00mm
Shutter speed: 1/4500
Manipulated in Lightroom
110GSM trace paper and Artline pens
Then scanned and photoshopped

PROCESS

For this image I used a Canon EOS 550D with 58mm lens. After taking the photograph I printed it out and traced the buildings onto trace paper, using simple line work with Artline pens. I then scanned this into Photoshop, overlaying the drawing onto the original image at a lower opacity and made some slight adjustments until I was happy with the outcome.

REASONING

As I was looking for something to take a photograph of for this week's task, I noticed the bottles in my bathroom standing at different heights and widths, much like a cityscape, so I snapped this shot.

REFLECTION

I think this image looks really fun and playful!

IMAGE TWO - LIGHT SWITCHES // BUTTONS

TECHNIQUE

Camera: Canon EOS 550D
ISO: 200
F/stop: 28.00mm
Shutter speed: 1/4500
Manipulated in Lightroom
110GSM trace paper and Artline pens
Then scanned and photoshopped

PROCESS

For this image I used a Canon EOS 550D with 58mm lens. After taking the photograph I printed it out and traced button details, such as holes and thread, using simple line work with Artline pens. I then scanned this into Photoshop, overlaying the drawing onto the original image at a lower opacity and made some slight adjustments until I was happy with the outcome.

REASONING

When I saw this row of switches I imagined how it might continue, what it would become then... then I envisioned a button down collared shirt.

REFLECTION

I think this looks really cute and goes to show that such a small and simple edit can go such a long way.

IMAGE THREE - FAN // FERRIS WHEEL

TECHNIQUE

Camera: Canon EOS 550D
ISO: 200
F/stop: 28.00mm
Shutter speed: 1/4500
Manipulated in Lightroom and Photoshop
110GSM trace paper and Artline pens
Then scanned and photoshopped

PROCESS

For this image I used a Canon EOS 550D with 58mm lens. I grabbed my photograph of the ferris wheel from the EKKA and skewed it until it lines up with the photo of the fan. I printed it out and traced the carriages. I then scanned this into Photoshop, overlaying the drawing onto the photograph of the fan. I then played with opacity and adding colour until I was happy.

REASONING

I noticed the standing fan in the kitchen and realised the spinning movement was not unlike that of a ferris wheel.

REFLECTION

I think this looks fun! The lines could have been edited slightly further, the white line around them looks a little unrefined, but overall I think it looks great.

IMAGE FOUR - TREE ILLUSION
TECHNIQUE

Camera: Canon EOS 550D
ISO: 200
F/stop: 33.00mm
Shutter speed: 1/4500
Manipulated in Lightroom

PROCESS

For this image I used a Canon EOS 550D with 58mm lens. I went into my backyard and lifted up a mirror to create the illusion that the trees reflected behind were part of the trees in front. As we have the same trees growing on either side this looks quite effective.

REASONING

I like the idea of playing with people's eyes and making people look twice at something.

REFLECTION

This image looks quite effective, like the mirror might just be a white hollow circle that you are looking through.

IMAGE FIVE - PETER PAN & CO AT THE EKKA

TECHNIQUE

Camera: Canon EOS 550D
ISO: 200
F/stop: 27.00mm
Shutter speed: 1/1600
Manipulated in Photoshop and Illustrator

PROCESS

For this image I used a Canon EOS 550D with 58mm lens.
To enhance the colours I altered the levels in photoshop.
I then added stars by using the paint brush tool in a range of stroke types, sizes, colours, opacities and with different effects such as soft and vivid light. I traced some images of the characters from Peter Pan in illustrator and filled them in white. I then brought this file into Photoshop, separating them as individual layers to create a gradient in scale and opacity. I applied the outer glow effect to these layers as well.

REASONING

As I was sifting through my photos, I randomly found this photograph that I took at the EKKA and it took me by surprise. I think it looks so magical and I began to imagine what else could be happening in the sky. I imagined the scene in Peter Pan when he is first taking the children to Neverland and they are flying around the clock so I tried to create a similar scene in this image.

REFLECTION

I think this final image looks so whimsical and beautiful. The familiarity of the character's silhouettes brings about a sense of nostalgia. I am really happy with how it turned out!
