WEEK THREE - PORTRAITS

This week I produced the following portraits which come under the provided categories.
IMAGE ONE - SOMEONE WHO LIVES WITH YOU
THEODORE // THEO // MISTER THEO

TECHNIQUE

Camera: Canon EOS 550D
ISO: 200
F/stop: 25.00mm
Shutter speed: 1/1600
Manipulated in Lightroom

PROCESS

For this image I used a Canon EOS 550D with 58mm lens.
To create more atmosphere and enhance the colour of Theo's hair I used Adobe Lightroom.

REASONING

I took this photograph of Theo as the only other people I live with are my mother and sister, neither of which are comfortable having their photo taken. Theo is very gentle and calm in nature and I wanted to capture that. When I noticed him laying on the front verandah I captured this shot.

REFLECTION

I like how this photo turned out. The original image was quite overexposed and didn't evoke much emotion, so I am glad I was able to restore it in Lightroom.

IMAGE TWO - A STRANGER

TECHNIQUE

IPhone 7 Camera
Manipulated in Lightroom

PROCESS

I took this photo from a distance in the Library on my phone. I later zoomed in and cropped it to create more of a focus on the person. To add the black and white effect and create more atmosphere I manipulated the photo in Lightroom.

REASONING

I felt pretty uncomfortable about taking a photo of a stranger so I tried to find a situation where I could be as discreet as possible. When I saw the person wasn't looking I took the opportunity to snap this shot.

REFLECTION

This image turned out alright. I like the stream of light, but overall I am not overly happy with the whole composition - it could have been far more considered.

IMAGE THREE - A CLASSMATE
HAYLEY RICHARDS

TECHNIQUE

Camera: Canon EOS 550D
ISO: 1250
F/stop: 27.00mm
Shutter speed: 1/1600
Manipulated in Lightroom

PROCESS

For this image I used a Canon EOS 550D with 58mm lens.
I wanted to further bring out the sepia tones so I did so in Lightroom.

REASONING

Hayley has been my classmate in many of my classes in my last three years of university and has become a close friend of mine. I wanted to capture her simply in her natural element so I captured this at her home while she was having a conversation with a friend.

REFLECTION

I really like the tones and framing of this photo. The lighting was naturally quite nice so I didn't have to manipulate it that much. It is not perfectly focussed which is a bit of a shame but overall I am happy with the outcome.

IMAGE FOUR - SELF PORTRAIT

TECHNIQUE

Camera: Canon EOS 550D
ISO: 200
F/stop: 36.00mm
Shutter speed: 1/1100
Manipulated in Lightroom

PROCESS

For this image I used a Canon EOS 550D with 58mm lens.
To further enhance the focus on myself and the softness of the image, I made some adjustments in Lightroom.

REASONING

I wanted to create a self portrait that didn't look too much like a "selfie". I set up the mirror and angled myself so I was still in shot and the main feature, but there were still other elements to the photograph.

REFLECTION

I like how this turned out! There is nice contrast of brightness and softness which is quite reflective of my personality. Although it is considered, I feel it looks natural, which was my intention.

IMAGE FIVE - ILLUSTRATED SELF PORTRAIT

TECHNIQUE

Artline pen on 100GSM trace paper
Manipulated in Photoshop

PROCESS

I printed out a photograph of myself and used a 0.5mm Artline pen to create a (mostly) continuous line drawing of myself. I added some further emphasis on the eyes, nose, and mouth afterwards. I then scanned the drawing into photoshop and created a white background to make the image appear a bit more polished.

REASONING

Initially I used a photograph for reference and attempted to sketch myself realistically. Although it turned out quite nicely, I felt it lacked personality, and looked a little off. I love the style of simple line drawings so I went for that instead! I felt the tracing would help in making the proportions of my face more accurate.

REFLECTION

I like this quite a lot! I quite like the wobbliness of the line work - it looks authentic. I have just noticed there are a few spots where the original trace paper texture can be seen, so if I were to do this again I would fix that up! Overall I think this illustration is pretty groovy.
