Jimi Hendrix
Screen-printing 4 colors poster for Jimi Hendrix 1942–1970
This was originally an assignment for a screen-printing class and the goal was to take an image of a famous singer and redesign it for silkscreen production. Jimi Hendrix was an obvious choice, since I had been entertaining the idea to use him as a subject for a future project. I made a few adjustments and design modifications for this competition submission. The reference image was taken from an iconic live performance onstage in England on February 24th, 1969. I used a pallet of mellow earth tones that were popular in the early 60’s and wanted to incorporate the mood of the era reflected in my piece with Mid Century Modern era design elements. The font I used for his name, was inspired from an album cover for Bleeding Heart.

Jimi Hendrix was born in Seattle, Washington, in 1942. As a teenager, he learned to play the guitar and shortly grew into the icon as a performer, songwriter and singer. He experimented with sound, and in combination with his amazing skills, became an innovator of the 1960’s music scene. In 1969, at Woodstock, he performed one of him most incredible performances, playing the Star Spangled Banner on the electric guitar. He unfortunately died prematurely in 1970, but his influence on the world and music will remain as his legacy.
