It also portrays the trajectory of funerary art and architecture during its period of significance

Stonington Cemetery began as family plots for two families important to the founding and settlement of the town. It was expanded into a larger rural garden cemetery with contemporary memorials as Stonington Cemetery was envisioned as a green space for passive recreation and quiet contemplation. It memorializes numerous town leaders, sea captains from the heyday of the historic triangular trade with the West Indies, African American residents and even paupers, although the latter' graves are unmarked. It also contains several noteworthy and architecturally worthy mausoleums.
