The Emplizza Campaign (GrowME Internship)

Emplizza Campaign & Website
GRAPHIC DESIGN / PRINT DESIGN / WEB DESIGN

Client: Victoria University Careers and Employment  |  Program: GrowME Internship Program
Development Time: March - June 2016 (3 Months)  |  My Role:  Designer / Project Manager

The Emplizza Campaign is an event created under Victoria University Careers and Employment's GrowME internship program. I was placed in the Commerce Team with six other students to create an event which promoted Employability Awareness to second and third year students of Victoria University of Wellington.

CONTEXT —

The issue encountered was that majority of Victoria University students are not presently in the mindset to think about employability in relation to their own skill set. This only comes into effect when they are in their final years or actively searching for a job.

SOLUTION
The objective of this project was to engage students to think about the relevant skills that will enhance their employability. Emplizza (Employability Pizza) is a one-off event aimed at promoting employability awareness to students within Victoria University of Wellington. The event involved students building their own ‘skills pizza’ where ingredients matched with employable skills. Upon completing the task, students receive a free slice of pizza as a reward.

DESIGN OUTCOMES —

Logo & Branding
Simple branding was designed and created for the team and project. The logo was used on all print and digital forms of advertising for the campaign.
While iterating on logo, I was torn between using a script or serif font. While several serif fonts gave the logo a clean and professional look, it lacked the 'fun' from some of the messier script/handwritten fonts. I wanted to go with a logo that would be able to used anywhere and would work well with additional text.  Although I did like the look of serif text within the logo, I decided that I could potentially use the same fonts within documents.

FINAL LOGO
I started leaning towards using cleaner script fonts inspired by several Italian pizza logos through research. This allowed the iterated logos to give the right amount of balance between a professional and casual/fun mood that we wanted our event to feel.

Document Design
We were required to keep documentation and progress reports of our project throughout the internship. As one of my roles in the team required me to write and keep the documentation updated, I designed layouts for each documents our team used and viewed by our client. By keeping clean and structured documentation, our client felt confident in the project's progress and continuously communicated her feedback with us.

Graphic Design
Throughout the project, I needed to design and create several graphic designs - including poster and email graphics for event advertisements and the event setup itself. There were two styles that I was torn between:

RED
As the university walls are always covered completely with posters, I wanted to design an event poster that would stand out among all the other posters on the wall. With many of the posters either being white, black or a darker colour, using red combined with the words 'FREE PIZZA', the poster would be bound to capture any student who walks by.

CHALKBOARD BLACK
The second iteration of the poster was inspired and created like a chalkboard. My teammates and client representatives were very keen on implementing the certain style to give the event a true 'Italian pizzeria' feel. By using the chalkboard style, the poster and it's layout could be used universally with any future graphics relating to the event while still being able to keep the same theme. Although my preference was with the original red iteration, the team and the client both preferred the chalkboard styled graphics.

POSTERS
We printed around 50 posters which were posted in the most popular spots on campus.

EMAIL GRAPHICS
I adapted the poster design as email visuals to be sent round to the students through VicCareers. As VicCareers has the ability to email all students, the email graphics were sent to all 21,200+ undergraduate and post graduate students a week before the event.

DISPLAY GRAPHICS
The design was adapted to fit a large display screen that would be placed up next to our event stall. Unfortunately due to time constraints we were not able to get the display printed.

Social Media Design
To advertise the event, the team decided to take advantage of Victoria University Careers and Employment Facebook page as they already had a following of 1,500 people. As other teams within the internship program had also decided to use this approach of advertising, I wanted to create compelling graphics to allow our team's event to stand out.

Website Design
At the end of the project I designed a single page website which summarised the event and the journey our team took. This website was proposed to be shown for interns who would be partaking the program in the following year. The website's design was inspired by the style of several gourmet pizza websites.
