1st place I Multi-Storey Building With Steel Framework

An award winning project in the «STEEL2REAL2016» competition. 
Objective: to develop a master plan of a residential area in a given territory and to design a residential house with an office part using steel structures and demonstrating their capabilities. 
Solution: the master plan provides conditions for comfortable living for all groups of residents. The building has steel frame structural scheme which is highly effective as it allows re-planning of floors using the idea of the building envelope which is the basis of the project’s ecological principles.The ventilated removable module system (smart crystals) plays a form establishing role.
Тopographic survey of the projected area showed that it is characterized by flat terrain. 

The building is designed as a part of the CRYSTAL residential complex. It is located at the projected area of New Moscow district at the central crossroad and supposed to be its architectural dominant. 
The residential buildings are designed to increase in height as they approach public highways, creating dynamic silhouettes and making it possible to concentrate the larger part of the area’s population in the parts of the district with the most efficient  transportation facilities. 
The master plan provides conditions for comfortable living for all groups of residents  and allows pedestrian accessibility to a school (500m) and kindergartens (300m). There is a shopping mall, a health center and a sports complex in the central part of housing area. The townhouses quarter is situated in the distance. There are two two-level underground parking lots with a total capacity of 950 cars conveniently situated within walking distance from the neighborhood.
Residential landscaping includes children’s playgrounds, recreation areas, outdoor sport playgrounds, waste areas and parking zones.
Ramps and comfortable elevators are at hand for disabled people. 
Ground floor includes shops and objects of social and household facilities.
The building has steel frame structural scheme.
The Exterior brick walls are self-supporting. The internal walls between apartments are made of brick, walls inside apartments made of plasterboard. Stairwells and elevator shafts with halls merged into the reinforced concrete stiffening cores. Section of residential houses of different heights are separated by expansion joints. This construction scheme allows one ground floor and up to 11 living floors. Steel frame constructive scheme is highly effective as it allows re-planning of the ground floor depending on changing of its functionality, as well as having various options of apartment layouts.
The typical floor plan includes several different types of apartments (one-bedroom two-three, and so on) in several plan variations. Due to the construction scheme the location of the partition walls and windows on different floors can vary. 
An important aspect of the project is the public spaces development. There is a recreational public space on the roof. Glazed steel structure above the roof can be easily transformed or folded with the help of guide ways.
Each building in the development has its own distinctive appearance, based on the use of geometrical patterns on their facades. 
The basis of the project’s ecological principles is the idea of the building envelope, which can be changed and transformed by the residents.
The concept is inspired by bee’s cells as a comfortable and pleasant form for visual perception.
During the concept development the cells were transformed into three-dimensional crystals and which gave the name to residential complex.
The ventilated removable module system (smart crystals) plays a form establishing role and has the following functions:
1)noise protection
2) sun-light protection (passive cooling due to the system’s light-reflectiong properties)  / passive cooling due to its light-reflectiong properties during the summer
3)solar penetration / wind protection - passive heating in winter
4)There are apartment ventilation vents into which air cleaning filters may be installed .
5) Each crystal has integrated solar arrays.
6) The inclination angle of the crystal’s planes is matched according to the Central Russia territory specifications in order to maximize the use of solar energy and to avoid the formation of snow bags.
Each crystal is provided with a system of inline vacuum cleaning.
There is dust-removal system inside each crystal.
The "crystals" are attached to the steel frame of the building through a heat-insulating element.
All load-bearing steel structures are situated inside the warm circuit of the building, which increases its durability (about 100 years).
 
Also the architectural image of the building is created by two cantilevered volumes on the building sides, increasing the area and comfort for the apartments with improved layout. This solution is realized by steel supporting structures visible on the facade and system of spatial farms hidden under a hinged facade.
Some of the buildings are raised on columns in order to create an additional pedestrian connections in the centre of the district.
