TransCanada Corp. said last Thursday that it was looking for 225,000 bbl/day of commitments from shippers for its Keystone XL project.

Every barrel of Canadian crude committed to Keystone XL is one more barrel for U.S. Gulf Coast refiners to profit from and export, one less barrel that will be upgraded and refined in Canada, and one less barrel available for shipping down Energy East to displace imports of foreign crude into eastern Canada.

According to the NEB, Canadian crude oil imports rose to 759,000 bbl/day in 2016.

Oil sands producers could provide all Canadians with energy security by eliminating crude oil imports from unstable, undemocratic, and environmentally irresponsible oil producing countries – many of which harbour and fund corrupt, despotic dictatorships, human rights violations, brutal civil wars, and fanatical religious and anti-Western terrorism aided by profits from the sale of crude oil to eastern Canada.
