Kaagaz Kollectiv - Branding & Collateral Design

The brief given to me for this classroom branding assignment was to brainstorm and conceptualise a brand/agency which I would be keen to set up in the future. Since I’m a voracious reader and a stationery fanatic, I decided that my brand would be along those lines. It would either be a small publishing setup or a paper products brand. Ultimately, after giving both the ideas deep thought and post a discussion with the subject mentor, I decided to go ahead with a paper products and graphic stationery brand. The product range would focus primarily on sketchbooks and notebooks , along with retailing papers of various kinds and sizes. The idea that i would design the logo and branding for something that I’m so obsessed about.

The first stage was the nomenclature of my brand. The name had to embody the fact that the brand sold a range of paper collectibles and graphic stationery. Hence, I started to list down the words that would do that. I also looked at words which represent a concept and not a material. ‘Kaagaz’, ‘Likhai’, ‘Lipi’, ‘Navam’ were some of the words that I felt were suitable. At this point, I felt that I wanted a bilingual name for my brand since I felt that it would exemplify the diversity of the paper products and graphic stationery that I wanted to incorporate in my brand.

Thus I decided that ‘Kaagaz’ would be the Hindi part of the name. Since the range of products would be extensive, I realised that the word ‘Collective’ would be the English part of the name. After jotting it down, I pondered over it and felt that both words should have a link between them. That’s how ‘Collective’ became ‘Kollective’ and later, ‘Kollectiv’. Thus, my brand was christened ‘Kaagaz Kollectiv’.
