M I C R A S T E R I A S
Initially inspired by the fascinating and delicate shapes of microbiology, my design has developed to celebrate the intricate and beautifully symmetrical micrasterias algae. The decision to take inspiration form this odd subject matter was mainly inspired by the 'Off Beat' trend youtube video, which offers the words 'Strange Beauty'. I have taken the algae and portrayed it in a way that showcases its uniques shapes through hand embroidery, tambour embroidery, digital embroidery and laser cutting. I have tried to seek a harmonious balance between these traditional and modern techniques. The digital embroidery features both steil stitch and complex fill as a base for other techniques; this includes hand stitching of the micrasterias shape outline, scaled up to show the intricate detail. This shape is also celebrated though tambour embroidery, which traces the outside edge of the algae. My designs also offer a three dimensional element with the algae shapes being laser cut, layered and hand sewn down with beads between each layer. My design offers a bold and youthful colour palette that marry a rich cobalt blue with a playful magenta, both contrasted with the bright shade of peach. I have also created my own algae sequins which are printed acetate which was then lasercut and attached with beads.
