Body & Action
'Position II'
In this performance I challenged myself to take in a large variety of changing positions, covering myself with a red blanket on a black sofa, leaving an even amount of 'residual forms', as I pushed the blanket away, within the time frame of 10 seconds directed by the camera's timer. The time that it took to take in a new position including walking back to the sofa and grabbing the blanket.
This experimental performance focuses on 'body' as a vehicle for action and influence, designed within the concept of a restrained frame, or setting. The acting 'self' in such a 'position' calls upon psychological resources. In this case determination and endurance.
Yet, although we see a large variety of changing positions and forms, it seems rather a repetitious act since each new position within the same setting is just a next. It shows that it is impossible to bring about real change without breaking through the barriers of an existing system.
'Position' (II) came into existence during the last day of my artist residency in China where I was invited by the Chinese European Art Center.
The photographs were taken in 2014 and the video was created in 2015. It was presented within exhibition '40 Titles II', which was a large total installation. More about that here.
'Position I'
'Position I', originated from a site specific project in public space. The concept arose in coherence with the space of the gallery, which was a historical urinal, located in Lonneker (NL).
Here I used red clothes to suggest the body of a human that is captured in a violent hanging position, collapsing, reflecting torture. I developed my sculpture by minimal means: The clothes, hanging from the top with clothes line and clamps, are shaped by cushion filling and especially prepared balloons. They are holding the lower body, so it slowly collapses over time, as the balloons deflate.
'Move'
The principle of action and movement was also present within sculptural installation 'Move', that came before 'Position'. This situation is the result of a 'move'. The word relates to this action, which results in what is presented and in that context can generate many different 'perspectives'.
