Techniques for Learning Choreography

At the Linda Jamieson School of Dance, students have a number of opportunities to perform. The Linda Jamieson School of Dance competitive team and its year-end recital welcome both recreational and preprofessional students, while the preprofessional dancers may also perform in the annual production of The Nutcracker and in high-level championships and examinations.

Efficient learning of choreography is a skill that every dancer needs to master. Experts recommend that dancers start by understanding the broader patterns and pathways of movement, as this places a performer in the correct stage space from the beginning.

Once dancers know where to be and when, they can focus on details. For most dancers, this requires learning each phrase in pieces. If the choreographer or teacher presents longer pieces than a dancer can learn at one time, the dancer can break down the piece into smaller sections.

Some dancers find it helpful to visualize a difficult movement in slow motion or give the movement a simple and memorable name. For many dancers, mentally identifying body parts or changes in direction can be effective in recalling the details of the choreography.

Finally, dancers must learn the power of taking their eyes away from the teacher and focusing on internal sensations. By attending to the way each movement or transition feels, dancers can more effectively remember it on a body level.
