Notch Interactive - 250K
A study into high quality real-time rendering for natural touch interaction.
All media shown here is with zero post-processing outside of Notch.
We leveraged GPU technology to generate high quality interactive particle systems.

250,000 particles in 3D space with real-time fluid dynamics & physical lighting.
User touch input for natural manipulation and interaction.
The end of compromise between high quality & real-time performance.
Traditionally, render quality is compromised for performance reasons to allow for user interaction. We sought out the bleeding edge of graphics performance for real-time rendering with 250,000 particles. By working in 3D space, the particle system accommodates 3D models, as well as physical lighting and volume shadow shading to give a true sense of depth when presented on a flat display. In addition, we were able to process accurate depth of field and other 2D post effects in real-time for a wholesome, yet immediate content workflow.
Real-time physics simulation capabilities were leveraged to accomplish the dynamic and fluid behavior we were seeking. A variety of looks were achieved by layering multiple different physics systems and tuning parameters to simulate real world scenarios. By incorporating physics like gravity, fluid dynamics, and inter-particle forces, a basic particle system transcends into a dynamic and organically evolving piece of behavior.
The last bit involving user touch input is what produces a truly magical experience. Proper fluid dynamics allows us to correctly access the acceleration and velocity of the user's touch input. The natural and organic response from the physics simulation creates a much stronger connection between user and experience.
