Personified software issues for development team
Case Study
Brief and problem definition
My task was to create illustrations of personified software issues (tech people call them “bugs”) of three kinds: critical, major, nice-to-have.
The illustrations are meant to be used digitally (viewed on screens) for gamification of development process in bug tracking system. But, as the client said, the pictures would probably be printed on t-shirts and tea cups.
The design was required to be “a kind of flat design but somewhat fancier”. We agreed to make the cards look “more material” with illusion of rough paper and with reverence to the first half of the 20th century.
Domain research and mood board
Mood boards help to discover possible concepts that reflect essence of the product; it’s a great way to stay with the client on the same page.
Ideation, sketching, construction
As we, visual people, know when it comes to graphic design basic shapes (triangle, square, circle) are our old good friends.
In order to mock up how in reality light and shadow would lay down I did some paper model like so.
Also, to construct “nice-to-have” bug I made use of golden ratio circular grid (and my seeing eyes).
Finally...! :)
