Scarpa, Meet Kahn. 2011

Scarpa, Meet Kahn.
2011. soft pastel, charcoal, graphite, walnut ink, coffee, pen,
liquid cement color, paper, India ink. 79 x 34 inches.
Much like my later work “KAHNZUMTHORHOLL,” this piece began as an experiment of merging visual representations of architectural space. I had been immersed in looking at the way that the Italian visionary architect Carlo Scarpa connected his built materials. In need of something to bring me away from his voice and into my own, I decided to pose a new scenario that would introduce Carlo Scarpa’s work to that of another favorite space-maker, Louis Kahn. What transpired was a dialogue between projected images of their work and the arising inscapes of my own imagination. In the process, I looked to recombine these compelling and independently alive architectural spaces in a way that would poise another invented place, similarly alive.
