Shakespeare Redux

For these book jackets, I chose to do three of the greatest Shakespearean tragedies: Romeo & Juliet, Macbeth, and Hamlet. I wanted to put a modern spin on these classic works of literature. I did so by taking a minimalist approach, I worked through this project with the idea that “Less is more.”  Each book jacket has a pattern with a small illustration relating to the story. Romeo & Juliet is covered in roses, Macbeth is covered in daggers, and Hamlet is covered in skulls. These illustrations are done in black and grey to contrast the colored backgrounds. For the book jackets, I chose to work with a CMYK color scheme to give it a modern look. On top of the jackets I used bands to display the titles. The type in each title is conceptually related to the story. Romeo & Juliet shows the names connecting to show love.  Macbeth is enlarged and bleeding off the page to give a feeling of anxiety. Hamlet is reflected vertically to symbolize self-reflection. Also, the weights of each typeface in the titles are related to how dark or tragic the story is. This decision was not opinion-based as I used the death counts in each story to decide. I used two different paper stocks for the book jackets. On the actual jacket I used a smooth, vellum paper to really bring out the colors. On the bands, I used a textured Kraft-Tone not only to contrast the jackets, but to compliment the white space that is a powerful component on the bands.
