The topic of my book is skateboarding. The content varies from simple tips to better yourself, to some "unwritten rules." The sport is commonly known to have no rules, which isn't always the case, so I felt it was important to bring attention to this sort of etiquette. I did plenty of experimenting with alternative type, but my favorite outcome was the use of old and broken skateboard decks that I laid out and shaped into numbers. I made all twenty (20) numbers out of an assortment of decks. To contrast the grungy, shoddy look of the boards, I placed them in spreads that are bright, clean, and organized. On each spread, I used a highly saturated background, with large skateboarding photos covering sections of the page. To emphasize the concept of framing in skate photography, I placed colored rectangular outlines around the subject of the image as well as part of the colored section of the page. This helped me develop a color scheme for each page, whether the background and frame matched or complemented the colors in the image. For the titles on each spread I used the sans serif font, League Gothic. League Gothic is a fairly condensed font with a high cap height. It's very bold and really stands out on top of the colors in my spreads. For my body text I used the serif font, Palatino which is thin and simple and I believe it pairs very well with League Gothic. The images, frames, and titles are layered in a way that really integrates them which gives a feeling of solidarity. I named my book "Kick Push Coast", which describes the three basic motions you go through while riding a skateboard. For the cover, I used grip tape (the rough black tape that goes on top of the board for traction). The grip tape on the cover looks both rough and clean at the same time. To apply the title to the cover, I made a stencil and then used white spray paint to put it onto the grip tape. It is really common for skateboarders to spray paint their grip tape as that really the only way to decorate that part of the board.
