The World to Come: Ukrainian Images of the Last Judgment
This book, a heavily illustrated catalog of Last Judgment icon paintings, was a wonderful challenge to design and typeset. The trim size was 7 inches wide by 10 inches tall to provide a large space to show off the many images. I designed the type column to a narrower width to maintain readability for the catalog descriptions, and took advantage of the extra space in the outer margins to add small thumbnails to the opening pages of each entry in the catalog. This ensured that nearly every page contained some kind of image, many in full color.
The catalog was divided into several major sections, each of which began with a full-spread splash page with bleeds. I did this to provide a clear division between sections, easily seen when flipping through the book, and even visible when closed.

Ties of Kinship: Genealogy and Dynastic Marriage in Kyivan Rus'
This is another book that benefits from a larger trim size (7in x 10in) and a nuanced page design, because it contains 22 genealogical tables and extensive discussion of the people shown in the tables. I included excerpts from the large tables alongside the discussions of the relevant individuals, to provide additional visual grounding for the relationships the author was analyzing. The typeface I chose, Caslon Pro, supported all the diacritics needed without having to kern by hand.
