Woodcuts – Compressed Time

Woodcuts – Compressed Time
Some time ago while snowshoeing in the Grisons area of the Swiss Alps, I came across some abandoned and dilapidated mountain sheds and cabins which had once been used by mountain farmers for storage. I was immediately struck by the weathered beauty of the logs' end pieces. How much time has passed since these trees were cut down? Nobody knows. Saws and axes once ended a living organism's life, but something new emerged: The trees became a part of stacked log walls, built by skilled craftsmen.

Decades and countless hard winters later, the cabins fell into disrepair and were given up. However, the cross-sections of the logs are still there, allowing us to gaze into the breathing of time and epochs. What's more, the wood is far from being dead, on the contrary. The withered end pieces have developed cracks and fissures, allowing new forms of life to emerge in the form of moss, lichen and fungi. Each cross section is different, an individual in its own right, like the tree it once was. And the best bit: Framed and hanging on people's walls, the «woodcuts» are given a new lease of life.

What started as a personal project published on Behance has evolved and turned into my main focus – producing fine art prints, which I present and sell via my website www.woodcuts.ch
