TROUBLE IN THE GARDEN

I made made this piece for an exhibit about the color RED. I chose to reflect the past and the present in one form. The warm ornate white glaze contrasts the cold electronic scrolling LED which reads DO NOT EAT OF THIS TREE OR YOU WILL DIE.

This piece refers to the biblical story of Adam and Eve. God placed them both in the Garden of Eden. They were created with everything they needed yet naked and pure without any temptations. God’s only rule" do not eat or touch the tree of knowledge. Tricked by the Devil disguised as a serpent, Eve ate a shiny RED apple from the forbidden tree and then shared her fruit with Adam. Angered by their lack of restraint, God banished them from the Garden for all time.

Whether you regard this story as biblical, mythical, or improbable, I see this as a metaphor pertaining to where we are today. There are many choices we will make that will forever impact humanity, from cloning to consumption to chaos in the Middle East. And despite our best intentions, we find ourselves once again beleaguered by a lack of restraint. Of course, how this story ends, only time will tell.
