HAYDN CD SERIES
CD Series Packaging

While keeping the environment in mind and the seedy history of over packaging in the music industry, the objective was to design packaging of a series of 5 CDs of a collection of music by Joseph Haydn using a unifying graphic system.

The design of the packaging was a reflection of the life of the composer, Joseph Haydn and how the events and experiences in his life affected each piece he created. In this way, the music acted like his own personal memoirs and so the music was divided to represent a significant stage in his life (i.e. The Early Years, The Golden Years, etc...) and each stage had a musically relevant, metaphorical equivalent (i.e. The Early Years = Intro).

Each CD got a page that had a summary of the stage in Haydn's life that he composed the music on that CD and how the experiences affected the music. The aesthetic of the ink blots and hand writing express the idea of the composer recording his life and the evolution of his music. At the top of the pages, there is a time line that indicates at what stage of his musical career you're at.

The design of the CDs  also reflected the overall concept and served to graphically tie the piece together. Haydn's music has a very playful quality that was shown in the intricate curls on the CD label that progressed and evolved as a reflection of his music reaching its peak.

To address the environmental issue, the piece was constructed with bamboo paper.
